Chelsea have been warned against pursuing Trent Alexander-Arnold, with a comparison of the Real Madrid defender’s best season and Reece James’ strongest campaign suggesting Xabi Alonso’s side may not need another right-sided defender.
According to a report by Football London on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, Chelsea are monitoring Alexander-Arnold’s situation at Real Madrid, where he is reportedly not an automatic starter under Jose Mourinho.
The England international joined Real Madrid after leaving Liverpool but has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter. His situation has reportedly attracted interest from Chelsea as the club consider potential reinforcements for Alonso’s squad.
However, a statistical comparison of Alexander-Arnold and James during the 2021/22 season raises questions about whether Chelsea should prioritise another signing in that position.
According to WhoScored, Alexander-Arnold recorded a rating of 7.51 that season, narrowly ahead of James’ 7.48.
James scored five goals and provided nine assists in 26 appearances for Chelsea, while Alexander-Arnold registered two goals and 12 assists in 32 matches for Liverpool. Both defenders finished with 14 goal contributions.
Alexander-Arnold had the advantage in chance creation, averaging 2.8 key passes per game compared with James’ 1.8. He also averaged 2.6 crosses per match, significantly more than James’ 0.9.
James, however, recorded more dribbles per game, averaging 1.4 against Alexander-Arnold’s 0.6. Both players averaged 1.3 tackles per match, although the Liverpool academy graduate recorded more interceptions.
The figures highlight their attacking qualities, although statistical comparisons alone cannot fully determine their overall defensive effectiveness.
Chelsea’s potential interest in Alexander-Arnold also comes amid continued concerns about James’ fitness. The Blues captain has undergone another knee operation and is expected to spend around three months on the sidelines.
Despite that setback, Chelsea already have several options for the right wing-back position, including Malo Gusto, Marco Palestra and Pedro Neto.
Consequently, signing Alexander-Arnold may not be an immediate priority, particularly if Alonso believes the existing squad can cover James’ absence.
