Chelsea Player Forcing His Way Back Into Xabi Alonso’s XI After three Games Out

According to a report by Football London on Wednesday November 4, 2026, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso could face several difficult selection decisions ahead of Sunday's Premier League meeting with Sunderland, with goalkeeper Emi Martinez reportedly pushing to return to the starting lineup.

The Blues are preparing for a difficult away fixture against Sunderland, who defeated them 2-1 in May 2026, ending their hopes of securing European qualification. Alonso will therefore be determined to secure revenge.

Several players are also competing for places, including Estevao, whose performances have created a selection dilemma. Wesley Fofana could also benefit from his recent form, while Marco Palestra, Jorrel Hato and Pep Chavarria are available again.

However, Martinez's potential return has become another major talking point after the Argentine goalkeeper was spotted participating in Wednesday's training session.

According to Mail journalist Kieran Gill, the experienced shot-stopper is eager to feature against Sunderland despite missing Chelsea's previous three matches following a fractured jaw.

Martinez was initially expected to remain unavailable for approximately six matches, potentially missing Chelsea's opening fixtures against Leeds United and Nottingham Forest after the international break.

His inclusion in Argentina's latest squad alongside Aaron Anselmino and Valentin Barco has further increased attention surrounding his recovery.

Gill reported: "Emi Martinez has been pushing to play vs Sunderland, and he's training today. Leaves Chelsea with a choice: stick with Mike Penders, or immediately return to Martinez."

Although Alonso is expected to provide an update on Friday, Martinez appears to be the leading candidate if both goalkeepers receive medical clearance.

Nevertheless, Penders has produced encouraging statistics during his opportunities. The young goalkeeper has conceded two goals in three appearances, recording a 77.8 per cent save percentage.

Martinez, meanwhile, has conceded 11 goals across six appearances, with a save percentage of 69.4 per cent.

Despite Penders' superior numbers, Martinez remains Chelsea's established first-choice goalkeeper. Dropping the 21-year-old would nevertheless be disappointing, particularly considering his performances, although his mistake against Tottenham could influence Alonso's decision.
