Barcelona star not guaranteed minutes amid injury crisis as future remains uncertain

Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde is not guaranteed a place in Hansi Flick’s starting line-up despite the blaugrana’s defensive injuries, according to a report by Barca Universal on Wednesday October 28, 2026. The Catalan giants are preparing for their La Liga clash against Alaves and Flick has several options ahead of the match.

Alejandro Balde looked like a good option to step up after Xavi Espart suffered an ankle injury during Barcelona’s 2-1 loss to Real Madrid. However, the young defender will be out for around seven weeks.

Balde came on in the 30th minute after Espart asked to be subbed off. However, this does not guarantee that he will be in the starting XI for a long period.

The left-back has only had 28 minutes in his two appearances against Racing Santander and Paris Saint-Germain.

Balde’s chances of playing against Alaves may depend on the return of Jules Kounde as he recovers from an ankle sprain suffered against Real Betis.

Flick may use Kounde at right back and Joao Cancelo on the opposite flank if he returns. This could leave Balde out of the starting XI.

Andreas Christensen could be cleared to play soon. However, he is unlikely to be included in the starting XI immediately. His return could mean that Gerard Martin can play at left back in future.

Flick is also looking to his academy for options. Brian Farinas could be used for right back, Jordi Pesquer could be used on the left and Landry Farre and Guillem Víctor could be used.

The competition for places means that Balde could be in a tricky spot. He was reportedly told to consider leaving the club during the summer.

However, they are expected to look into his future again in January. There has been no confirmation that they will sell the defender.

Despite the injuries to the defence, he will have to prove to Flick that he deserves to play regularly. Whether he plays depends on his tactical decisions and how many defenders are available.

For now, the 22-year-old is unsure what his role will be. The next few weeks could be key to decide his role in Flick’s plans and his future at the club.
