According to a post by Fabrizio Romano on X on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, Michael Carrick defended Matheus Cunha’s commitment despite expressing disappointment over the forward’s sending-off.
The Manchester United manager acknowledged that he was unhappy with how the incident ended.
However, he believes the red card also reflected Cunha’s passion and willingness to give everything for the team.
“I was a bit disappointed with how it finished [red card] but it just shows how much he cares and he's willing to do when he's in that frame of mind,” Carrick said.
The manager explained that Cunha’s intensity is something United want to see when he performs with the right attitude. He suggested that the Brazilian’s energy and determination can make an important contribution to the team.
“When he's in that mood, and he plays like that that’s why we want him here,” he added.
Carrick’s comments highlight the balance between appreciating a player’s competitive spirit and expecting discipline on the pitch.
While he recognised Cunha’s commitment, the manager made clear that the manner in which the match ended was disappointing.
Cunha’s red card means his performance will be remembered for both his contribution and the dismissal. However, Carrick’s assessment suggests the incident has not changed his appreciation of the forward’s desire to compete.
The manager’s remarks also underline the qualities he expects from players representing Manchester United.
He wants them to show passion, intensity and commitment, while ensuring those qualities do not come at the expense of discipline.
For Cunha, the challenge will be to maintain that aggressive approach while managing his emotions during matches.
Carrick’s message was that he values the Brazilian’s determination and wants to see him bring that same intensity to future performances.
