Xabi Alonso faces an important selection decision ahead of Chelsea's Premier League trip to Sunderland, with Estevao Willian hoping to retain his place after an impressive performance against Manchester United.
According to a report by Football London on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, Alonso could be considering whether to start the Brazilian again or leave him on the bench because of Sunderland's physical approach and the intensity expected at the Stadium of Light.
Estevao made his first Premier League start of the season during Chelsea's 2-0 victory over Manchester United on Saturday.
The 19-year-old produced an impressive display and came close to scoring twice, although both efforts were ruled out.
His performance has increased calls from Chelsea supporters for him to remain in the starting XI when the Blues travel to Wearside this weekend.
However, Alonso must consider the different challenges Sunderland could present. Regis Le Bris' side are known for their physical approach, with their players ranking among the Premier League's most successful teams in duels this season.
Sunderland had won 468 duels before the weekend, placing them behind only Nottingham Forest, Manchester City, Brentford, Leeds United and Tottenham in that particular statistic. Chelsea were close behind with 464.
The physical nature of the contest could influence Alonso's decision, particularly given his previous comments about Estevao's adaptation to English football.
After Chelsea's defeat to Liverpool, the manager explained why the youngster had not featured regularly from the beginning.
"Yes, we know that the Premier League and the game in England is really intense. You need to be up for it.
"Este has played, for sure, it's his second season. But he had the injury and he's in that process. Trust me, I'm sure the season is going to be long and Este is going to play his role."
Nevertheless, Alonso was pleased with the Brazilian's response against Manchester United and praised his attitude after being left out of previous starting line-ups.
"He has had the best response to show that he deserves more, that he was prepared and that's what you want from a football player, so I'm very happy for him."
The Chelsea manager also acknowledged the connection Estevao established with supporters and his determination throughout the match.
With Chelsea seeking another important league victory, Alonso must decide whether to reward the teenager with consecutive Premier League starts or prioritise different qualities against Sunderland.
