According to a report by Evening Standard on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has explained why Estevao was left out of the action as the Blues crashed out of the Carabao Cup following a penalty shootout defeat to Liverpool on Wednesday night.
The match at Anfield ended 1-1 after both teams scored from the penalty spot in the first half. Liverpool eventually won 6-5 on penalties to book their place in the quarter-finals, while Chelsea were eliminated from the competition.
Estevao was among the players who remained on the bench throughout the match, despite supporters calling for the young Brazilian winger to be introduced as Chelsea searched for a winning goal.
Alonso explained that the intensity of the match and the need to make changes because of fitness concerns affected his decision. Chelsea had to replace defender Maxence Lacroix after he suffered a suspected hamstring injury, while Moises Caicedo experienced discomfort and Malo Gusto suffered cramps.
These issues limited the manager's choices as the game progressed, forcing him to use his available substitutions to deal with the situation on the pitch.
Speaking after the match, Alonso admitted that he understood Estevao's frustration at not getting an opportunity to play.
"I understand his situation and he could be happier for sure. Every player wants to play, wants to be part of the team," the Chelsea manager said.
He also explained that the game was physically demanding and that the Brazilian would have opportunities to feature as the season continues.
Alonso further pointed to the intensity of English football and Estevao's recovery from injury as factors affecting his playing time.
"Trust me, I'm sure the season is going to be long and Este is going to play his role," he added.
Chelsea will now turn their attention to the Premier League after their Carabao Cup exit. Alonso will hope to get his team back to winning ways and give Estevao more opportunities to contribute in the coming matches.
