According to a report by Barca Universal on Wednesday November 4, 2026, former Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has opened up about Barcelona's past interest in signing him, revealing that the Catalan giants held discussions with his representatives but never made a formal transfer offer.
The Spanish midfielder, who currently plays for Real Zaragoza, made the revelation during an interview with former Atletico Madrid star Mario Suarez on his podcast.
Herrera explained that Barcelona explored the possibility of bringing him to the club on multiple occasions, particularly during his spells at Athletic Club and Manchester United.
However, despite the transfer speculation and discussions behind the scenes, the move never materialised.
"There's been a lot of speculation over the years – there was talk when I was at Athletic Bilbao, and there was talk when I was at Manchester United – but it's true that there's never actually been an offer," Herrera said, as quoted by SPORT.
The former Manchester United star also confirmed that Barcelona held conversations with his representative during those periods.
"They did have discussions with my agent, but I wasn't present at those meetings," he added.
Herrera was keen to clarify that Barcelona never presented him with an official proposal, despite the reported interest.
The midfielder also admitted that representing either Barcelona or Real Madrid would have been a special achievement in his career.
"Playing for Real Madrid or FC Barcelona is something that stays with you for the rest of your life," he said.
However, he made it clear that he does not support either Spanish giant, insisting that his loyalty belongs to Real Zaragoza, the club he supported growing up.
Herrera first established himself as a promising midfielder at Athletic Club before moving to Manchester United, where he became a popular figure among supporters.
He subsequently played for Paris Saint-Germain, returned to Athletic Club, joined Argentine side Boca Juniors and eventually signed for Real Zaragoza in the summer.
His latest comments have provided clarity on the Barcelona transfer rumours that followed him during different stages of his career.
Although the Catalan club reportedly considered signing him, the absence of a formal offer meant Herrera never came close to completing a move to the Spanish giants.
