Real Madrid want six PL clubs to pay €80m over abandoned Super League project

According to a report by Madrid Universal on Tuesday October 20, 2026, Real Madrid are seeking to recover up to €80 million from six Premier League clubs over their involvement in the abandoned European Super League project.

According to The Athletic, the Spanish giants want Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur to contribute towards the initial costs of establishing the controversial competition.

The six English clubs were among the original participants when the Super League was announced in April 2021. However, they withdrew within days following widespread criticism from supporters, football authorities and other stakeholders.

Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus continued to support the project for longer and reportedly shouldered much of the promotional expenditure associated with the proposed breakaway competition.

Despite the project's failure, Real Madrid believe the six Premier League clubs should still be responsible for their share of the initial costs.

The dispute centres on the shareholders' agreement signed by the clubs involved in the European Super League Company, a holding company based in Spain.

However, establishing whether the English clubs remain financially liable could prove difficult. The wording of the agreement, particularly its provisions concerning joint ownership and management, may become central to any legal argument.

The reported documents do not explicitly clarify how the costs should be divided, potentially complicating Real Madrid's attempt to recover the money.

If an agreement cannot be reached, the Spanish club could consider taking legal action to pursue its claim. However, it remains unclear whether the six Premier League sides will be required to make any payment.

Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez was one of the leading figures behind the Super League initiative, which aimed to create a new competition involving some of Europe's biggest clubs.

The proposal collapsed after intense opposition, particularly in England, where supporters protested against their clubs' involvement.

The latest development suggests that the financial consequences of the failed project have not been fully settled, even several years after its announcement.
