According to a report by BBC Sports on Tuesday October 20, 2026, Liverpool strengthened their position in the UEFA Champions League league phase after producing an impressive comeback to defeat Villarreal 4-2 at Anfield. The victory continued the Reds' perfect start to this season's European campaign, giving them three wins from their opening three matches and nine points in the standings.
Liverpool faced an early setback after Villarreal took advantage of defensive mistakes to establish a two-goal lead. Georges Mikautadze opened the scoring in the fourth minute before the Spanish side increased their advantage through another attacking move. The hosts responded before the interval, with Alexis Mac Allister reducing the deficit and Araujo scoring the equaliser to bring Liverpool back into the contest.
After the break, Liverpool increased the pressure and completed their comeback. Mac Allister scored again in the 65th minute, benefiting from an excellent attacking contribution by Rio Ngumoha, before Florian Wirtz added another goal three minutes later to put the home side ahead. Liverpool eventually secured a 4-2 victory, collecting three valuable points.
The result is particularly important because Liverpool had already defeated Atletico Madrid 2-1 in their opening match before recording a convincing 6-3 victory against LASK in their second fixture. Their latest success takes them to nine points, with 12 goals scored and six conceded across their first three matches.
How the Champions League Table Stands
Before Tuesday's fixtures, Liverpool occupied fifth position with six points, behind Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona, Aston Villa and Stuttgart. The victory over Villarreal takes the English club to nine points, strengthening its position among the leading teams in the league phase. However, the precise ranking can change as other Matchday Three fixtures conclude.
Liverpool's result also leaves Villarreal with three points from their opening three matches. The Spanish side had previously beaten Napoli 3-1 after losing their opening fixture against Borussia Dortmund.
Under the Champions League's current format, the top eight teams in the league phase qualify directly for the Round of 16, while clubs finishing between ninth and 24th must compete in the knockout phase play-offs. Teams placed 25th or lower are eliminated from the competition.
Liverpool will now look to maintain their momentum when they face Fenerbahce in their next Champions League fixture on November 4. Their comeback against Villarreal has provided another major boost to their qualification hopes, although maintaining consistency will be essential as the competition progresses.
