According to a report by GOAL on Friday October 23, 2026, Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has branded Bruno Fernandes and other complaining players at Old Trafford as selfish “babies” following the club’s disappointing Champions League defeat to Como.
Rooney criticised the players for publicly questioning manager Michael Carrick and the club’s decisions instead of taking responsibility for their own performances.
The former Manchester United captain made the comments after Fernandes questioned Carrick’s tactics following United’s 4-1 defeat to Como on Wednesday, a result that extended the club’s winless run to seven matches in all competitions.
Speaking on The United Stand podcast on Thursday, Rooney expressed his disappointment with the situation at his former club, warning that the players’ public complaints could damage the dressing room.
“When Martinez came out, I said this is an absolute nightmare because it will rip the dressing room apart. That was the start. We’ve seen it now with Bruno and you’re going to see it with more players because they don’t want to take responsibility,” Rooney said.
The former England international also took aim at the players’ attitude, accusing them of prioritising their personal interests over the team.
“These players, they’re selfish. They don’t care about their team-mates, don’t care about the manager, the staff or the fans, they care about themselves,” he added.
“If they’re not getting what’s right for them, they’re like babies and just throw their toys out of the pram and go and deflect the blame on to anyone else but themselves.”
Rooney’s comments also referenced Lisandro Martinez, who previously criticised United’s recruitment and director of football Jason Wilcox.
He argued that Fernandes and Martinez should focus on improving their performances rather than directing criticism towards others at the club.
“Bruno, he’s having probably the worst run of form he’s had since he’s been at the club and again, it’s no coincidence he’s putting pressure on someone else because he doesn’t want to face it,” Rooney said.
He urged both players and the rest of the squad to examine their own contributions to United’s struggles.
“If he looks at himself in the mirror, if Martinez looks at himself in the mirror, all the players... they’ll find what is looking back at them is them and it’s not good enough,” he added.
Manchester United have endured a difficult start to the campaign, sitting 13th in the Premier League with seven points from seven matches. Their poor run has also increased pressure on Carrick, who remains in charge despite growing speculation about his future.
The Red Devils will face Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday, with the match presenting an opportunity to respond to their recent setbacks.
