According to a report by Football London on Wednesday November 4, 2026, Chelsea are prioritising a midfield signing for January, with Bournemouth’s Alex Scott currently leading their shortlist. However, another available target could offer exactly what Xabi Alonso needs.
The Blues have monitored Scott for some time, and Bournemouth reportedly appear increasingly willing to consider selling him. Nevertheless, Martin Zubimendi could represent a more suitable option.
Chelsea previously explored signing the Spanish international during the summer. Fresh reports suggest he wants to leave Arsenal in January, potentially opening another opportunity for the Blues.
Although Arsenal are unlikely to strengthen a direct title rival, Zubimendi’s limited starting opportunities could encourage him to seek regular football elsewhere during January.
Chelsea’s midfield performances have lacked consistency this season. Moises Caicedo and Jordan Henderson have occasionally controlled matches, but other performances exposed significant weaknesses.
Their 2-0 defeat against Tottenham highlighted those problems, with Chelsea managing just 31 per cent possession despite playing at Stamford Bridge.
Even during their victory over Brighton, Alonso’s team recorded only 26 per cent possession, demonstrating their difficulties maintaining control against opposition midfielders.
Zubimendi could address those concerns through his outstanding distribution, positional intelligence and ability to dictate proceedings. His statistics demonstrate his considerable influence in midfield.
Last season, he completed 1,684 Premier League passes, outperforming 95.1 per cent of midfielders. His 373 line-breaking passes also placed him above 85.2 per cent.
Former Real Sociedad coach Aitor Zulaika praised his passing, defensive intelligence, forward movement, work rate and ability to intercept opposition attacks.
Romeo Lavia possesses similar qualities, but recurring fitness problems remain concerning. Alex Scott offers energy, intensity and impressive box-to-box movement rather than midfield control.
Scott has considerable potential, but Chelsea need someone capable of controlling possession and building attacks. Zubimendi would provide that balance alongside Caicedo, making him a better signing.
