Nigeria’s 16-Year-Old Wins Player of the Match Award After Superb Performance

According to a report by FIFA.com on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, Nigeria’s 16-year-old forward Oluwakemi Adegbuyi has won the Player of the Match award following her superb performance in the Flamingos’ 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico at the ongoing 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco on Tuesday.

Adegbuyi opened the scoring in the 25th minute at the Mohammed VI Football Complex, helping Nigeria secure their first victory in the tournament after losing their opening Group B fixture against Poland.

The young forward was a constant attacking threat for the Flamingos and continued to trouble Puerto Rico’s defence, particularly in the second half, with her performance earning her the individual recognition.

Her first-half goal proved crucial in giving Nigeria an early advantage as head coach Akeem Busari’s side looked to recover from their disappointing start to the competition.

The Flamingos eventually sealed the 2-0 victory in stoppage time when substitute Precious Oscar scored in the 90th+3 minute, heading home a delivery from Oluebube Umejiaku to confirm all three points for Nigeria.

The result represents a significant boost for Nigeria’s hopes of progressing from Group B, following their 2-1 defeat to Poland in their opening match.

Adegbuyi’s latest achievement adds to an impressive year for the teenager, who has continued to establish herself as one of the promising young talents in Nigerian women’s football.

The forward was previously named Player of the Tournament at the 2026 WAFU-B U-17 Girls Cup after playing a key role in Nigeria’s successful campaign.

She also earned individual recognition during the 2026 WAFU-B CAF Women’s Champions League qualifiers, where she starred for Edo Queens.

At just 16, her performances at both club and international levels underline her growing importance to the Flamingos as they pursue a successful campaign in Morocco.

Nigeria will now prepare for their final Group B encounter against defending champions Korea DPR on Friday, October 23.

The Flamingos will be hoping to build on their victory over Puerto Rico as they battle for a place in the knockout stage.
