Barcelona admit defeat in race for Man United star as Real Madrid close in on official announcement

According to a report by Barca Universal published on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, Barcelona have reportedly stepped back from their pursuit of Manchester United youngster JJ Gabriel, with Real Madrid moving closer to securing the highly rated prospect.

Transfer journalist Matteo Moretto reported that Gabriel has selected Real Madrid as his preferred destination, while negotiations between the Spanish club and the player's representatives are said to be nearing completion.

The report added that an official announcement could be made soon, although some details of the proposed transfer are still being finalised.

Gabriel is reportedly in Madrid, where he is continuing his training as discussions over the potential move progress.

Barcelona had previously shown considerable interest in signing the Manchester United prospect as part of their efforts to strengthen their youth development programme. The Catalan club had explored the possibility of bringing him to Spain and reportedly arranged an individual training programme for him during an earlier visit to Barcelona.

However, their attempts to reach an agreement have not produced the desired outcome, with Real Madrid now appearing to have the advantage in the transfer negotiations.

Financial considerations are believed to have contributed to Barcelona's decision not to pursue the deal further. The proposed transfer fee is reportedly between €10 million and €15 million, an amount that would represent a substantial investment in a young player.

Although Barcelona continue to monitor emerging talents, the club are reportedly reluctant to commit such a significant amount or engage in an expensive transfer battle for Gabriel's signature.

Real Madrid, on the other hand, appear to have made progress in addressing the financial requirements associated with the proposed move.

If completed, Gabriel's reported decision to join Real Madrid would add another development to the competition between the two Spanish rivals for promising young footballers.

For Manchester United, losing a highly regarded academy prospect could also represent a setback, particularly given the attention surrounding Gabriel's development and potential.

However, the transfer remains subject to the completion of negotiations and official confirmation from the parties involved.
