According to a report by The Athletic on Sunday, November 1, 2026, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso remains concerned about his team's defensive weaknesses despite their impressive 2-0 victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.
The report highlighted several problems affecting Chelsea's defence, including Wesley Fofana's inconsistent performances, recurring injuries among defenders and the absence of an experienced leader capable of organising the backline.
Chelsea's victory over United provided another encouraging result, giving the club its second clean sheet in three Premier League matches. This represents an improvement after a difficult period during which the Blues went nine months and 23 league fixtures without recording a clean sheet.
Goalkeeper Mike Penders played an important role in the latest success, producing an impressive second-half save to prevent Bryan Mbeumo from finding the net. The Belgian goalkeeper had also featured in Chelsea's previous clean-sheet victory against Everton.
However, the result did not completely conceal the defensive concerns facing Alonso. Manchester United created several dangerous opportunities before half-time, while Matheus Cunha also had a goal ruled out following a closely contested decision.
Fofana's performance attracted particular attention after he lost possession in a dangerous area, allowing Amad Diallo to threaten Chelsea's goal. The defender was also caught out during another United attacking move, raising questions about his concentration and consistency.
His disciplinary record has further complicated the situation. According to the report, Fofana has received two red cards in 25 appearances and seven yellow cards in 14 matches.
Chelsea's injury problems have also made it difficult for Alonso to establish a consistent defensive partnership. Malo Gusto, Levi Colwill, Pep Chavarria, Maxence Lacroix, Aaron Anselmino and Reece James have all been unavailable at different stages of the campaign.
Lacroix's latest hamstring injury is another setback, reducing the manager's available options ahead of a demanding schedule.
Despite investing approximately £130 million in defensive reinforcements during the summer transfer window, Chelsea could still return to the transfer market in January.
The club is reportedly considering the recruitment of an experienced centre-back who can provide leadership, organisation and greater stability.
Although the victory against Manchester United represents a positive result, Chelsea's ambitions of competing consistently will depend on addressing their defensive shortcomings and maintaining greater reliability at the back.
