Roméo Lavia should be considered a first-team regular after his brightest day in blue

According to a report by Football London on Sunday, 1 November 2026, Roméo Lavia has strengthened his case for a regular starting place at Chelsea after producing an outstanding performance in Saturday's 2-0 Premier League victory over Manchester United.

The Belgian midfielder delivered his most impressive display since joining Chelsea from Southampton in 2023, demonstrating why he could become an important figure in Xabi Alonso's plans.

Lavia was handed a rare starting opportunity after Jordan Henderson missed the encounter because of illness.

He partnered Moisés Caicedo in midfield as Alonso opted for a 4-3-3 formation rather than his preferred 3-4-3 system.

The tactical adjustment appeared to work, with Chelsea enjoying greater control in midfield and finishing the contest with 58 per cent possession.

Lavia was particularly impressive in possession, completing 72 passes with an accuracy of 89 per cent.

He also registered 16 line-breaking passes, more than any other player on the pitch, while avoiding being dispossessed throughout the match.

His defensive contribution was equally important, recording 23 defensive actions as he helped Chelsea contain Manchester United's midfield threat.

The Belgian also played a decisive role in Morgan Rogers' opening goal. He dispossessed Bryan Mbeumo before releasing the ball to Rogers, who produced an excellent solo finish to put Chelsea ahead.

Lavia completed the full 90 minutes in a Premier League match for the first time since arriving at Stamford Bridge and was deservedly named Man of the Match.

His performance was particularly encouraging given his difficult spell with injuries, which has prevented him from establishing himself consistently since his arrival.

Chelsea have long hoped to see Lavia develop a productive midfield partnership with Caicedo, and Saturday's display offered a glimpse of what the combination could achieve.

Alonso also praised the midfielder's mentality after the victory, highlighting his psychological readiness to contribute despite his previous fitness setbacks.

The Chelsea manager said: "Sometimes, the head is more important than the legs, and his head is in a good place."

With Henderson also competing for midfield places, Lavia will need to maintain his fitness and consistency.
