According to a report by Football London on Friday, October 16, 2026, Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori has identified Viktor Gyokeres as one of the most competitive players in Mikel Arteta’s squad, suggesting that the Swedish striker finds it particularly difficult to accept defeat.
Arteta has established a strong winning mentality at Arsenal, helping the club secure the Premier League title during the 2025/26 season. Players such as Declan Rice, Gabriel Magalhaes and Bukayo Saka are also recognised for their determination and competitive nature.
However, when Calafiori was asked to name the teammate who struggles most with losing, he singled out Gyokeres, suggesting that the striker takes disappointing results particularly seriously.
Arsenal signed Gyokeres from Sporting CP in 2025 for £55 million, with additional bonuses included in the deal. The Swedish international made an impressive start to life at the Emirates Stadium, scoring more than 20 goals across all competitions and playing an important role in the club’s success last season.
Despite his previous achievements, Gyokeres has faced challenges during the current campaign. Kai Havertz has moved ahead of him in Arteta’s selection, making it more difficult for the Swedish striker to secure a regular starting position.
Gyokeres started Arsenal’s matches against Ipswich Town, Napoli and Lille but failed to score in any of those appearances. Although the Gunners secured victories in all three games, his inability to find the net may have increased his frustration.
Speaking to Arsenal’s official website, Calafiori admitted that he also has a strong dislike for losing before naming Gyokeres as another teammate with an intense competitive spirit.
Calafiori explained that he considers himself one of the most competitive players in the squad but believes Gyokeres could be even more affected by defeat.
The Swedish striker has enjoyed significant success in recent years, winning league titles in each of his previous three seasons, including two with Sporting CP and one with Arsenal.
However, his position in Arteta’s starting lineup remains uncertain as he competes with Havertz for the centre-forward role. Gyokeres will need to make the most of his opportunities and demonstrate his scoring ability to establish himself as the club’s first-choice striker.
With competition for places increasing at Arsenal, the coming weeks could prove important for the 27-year-old. A return to consistent goalscoring form would strengthen his position in the team, while continued difficulties could raise further questions about his role in Arteta’s long-term plans.
