According to a report by Evening Standard on Saturday, October 31, 2026, Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has handed Brazilian forward Estevao a surprise starting role for the Premier League meeting with Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.
The decision represents a significant opportunity for the youngster, who has struggled to secure regular playing time since Alonso took charge of the Blues. Estevao was a regular feature in Chelsea's squad last season but has found himself on the fringes of the team during the current campaign. Before Saturday's encounter, he had made only two starts, both of which came in the Carabao Cup.
His limited involvement became a talking point following Chelsea's elimination from the competition after losing to Liverpool on Wednesday. Despite the match being level at 1-1 late in normal time, Alonso decided against introducing the Brazilian, opting instead to send Emmanuel Emegha onto the pitch for his Chelsea debut. Emegha subsequently missed a penalty during the shootout as Liverpool progressed.
Estevao had also been overlooked following Joao Pedro's injury, with another debutant, Geovany Quenda, preferred as his replacement. However, Alonso has now given the Brazilian an opportunity to demonstrate his quality against Manchester United, who arrived in west London seeking to end an eight-match winless run.
The Chelsea manager explained that the forward's preparation and performances in training influenced his decision to include him in the starting line-up.
Asked why he considered the match the right opportunity to start Estevao, Alonso said the player was ready and had been training well. He added that Chelsea needed him for the encounter and expressed hope that he would enjoy the game and make a positive impact.
The manager had also defended the youngster's place in his plans during Friday's pre-match press conference, insisting that his limited minutes did not mean he had no future at the club.
Alonso acknowledged that players naturally want to feature regularly but accepted responsibility for decisions that have restricted some members of his squad to fewer appearances.
He stressed that every player must remain prepared because they could become important at any stage of the season. The Spaniard also praised Estevao's attitude and commitment during training.
Furthermore, Alonso dismissed the possibility of the Brazilian leaving Chelsea on loan in January, despite reports suggesting that the youngster could consider other options in search of more playing time.
