According to a report by Manchesterevening News on Thursday October 22, 2026, Manchester United are reportedly considering an approach for a Manchester City defender as Michael Carrick attempts to improve the team’s fortunes following a disappointing start to the season.
Transfers between the Manchester rivals remain relatively uncommon because of their intense rivalry and history of competition, although Carlos Tevez’s controversial switch in 2009 remains a memorable example.
City have demonstrated their financial strength through significant spending in recent seasons, while United have increasingly shown reluctance to participate in expensive bidding battles despite making substantial investments themselves.
That difference became apparent during their pursuit of Elliot Anderson, whom United viewed as a potential future captain before City reportedly secured his signature for £116 million in July.
United’s recruitment difficulties have continued, particularly in defence, where the club failed to secure another specialist left-back before the summer transfer window closed despite obvious weaknesses in that position.
Luke Shaw’s fitness concerns and Patrick Dorgu’s injury problems have complicated matters, forcing Carrick to consider alternative options, including Noussair Mazraoui, Diogo Dalot and Ayden Heaven.
Their struggles have contributed to an underwhelming campaign, with United collecting seven points from seven Premier League matches before suffering a humiliating 4-1 Champions League defeat against Como on Wednesday.
According to Africafoot, United are now exploring a possible January loan move for Manchester City defender Rayan Ait-Nouri as they attempt to strengthen their left flank.
The Algeria international attracted interest from United during September, but negotiations reportedly collapsed after City demanded an obligation to buy rather than accepting the temporary arrangement proposed by their rivals.
Ait-Nouri joined City from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2025 but has struggled to establish himself, failing to make a Premier League appearance this season while recording three assists across other competitions.
His attacking qualities were evident during his final Wolves campaign, when he scored four league goals, supplied seven assists and completed 63 dribbles.
Former Wolves coach Edu Rubio has praised his close control, forward runs and one-on-one defending, although decision-making remains an area requiring improvement.
Ait-Nouri could provide United with an attacking alternative at left-back, but whether City accept another deal involving their local rivals remains uncertain, particularly given the disagreement over transfer conditions previously.
