According to a report by Barca Universal on Sunday October 25, 2026, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is reportedly preparing to use the same defensive lineup that started against Paris Saint-Germain when his team faces Real Madrid in Sunday’s El Clasico.
According to journalist Alfredo Martinez, Xavi Espart will occupy the right-back position, Pau Cubarsi and Gerard Martin will partner in central defence, while Joao Cancelo is expected to start at left-back.
The decision comes after Barcelona suffered their first defeat of the season, losing 4-2 to PSG at the Parc des Princes. Flick is facing a difficult selection situation because several defenders remain unavailable ahead of the crucial encounter at Spotify Camp Nou.
Jules Kounde is expected to miss the Clasico after failing to recover from the ankle injury he sustained against Real Betis. Eric Garcia and Andreas Christensen are also unavailable because of injury problems, leaving Flick with limited defensive alternatives.
Consequently, the Barcelona coach appears ready to maintain the back four that faced the French champions. Espart is in line for another opportunity after delivering an encouraging performance in Paris. The young defender even scored Barcelona’s opening goal, providing an attacking contribution despite the disappointing result.
Cubarsi and Martin are expected to continue their partnership in the heart of the defence. Martin has reportedly recovered from the knock that previously raised doubts about his availability for the match. Cancelo remains the leading candidate to occupy the left-back position.
However, Barcelona must improve defensively after conceding four goals against PSG. The upcoming Clasico presents Flick’s team with an opportunity to respond positively to their European setback and restore confidence.
Maintaining the same defensive structure could offer continuity, but the players must demonstrate better organisation and concentration against Madrid’s attacking threats. Cancelo will need to balance his forward runs with his defensive responsibilities, while Espart faces a demanding challenge against Madrid’s wide players.
Cubarsi and Martin must also remain composed under pressure throughout the encounter. Although injuries have restricted Flick’s choices, Barcelona will need a considerably stronger defensive performance to secure a positive result against their biggest rivals.
