The home side made a strong start and went ahead in the 12th minute through Aboubakary Koita, who finished Luka Jovic's pass beyond Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. The visitors restored parity in the 32nd minute as Jude Bellingham found the net with a superb back-heel finish following Marc Cucurella's assist.
Bellingham had previously scored, but his goal was disallowed after a VAR check confirmed that he was offside.
After the break, Real Madrid pushed forward in search of another goal but were dealt another setback in the 75th minute when Stavro Pilo finished Koita's pass to put AEK back in front.
The visitors responded almost immediately, with Kylian Mbappe converting Denzel Dumfries' delivery in the 78th minute to bring the score to 2-2.
Real Madrid refused to settle for a draw and continued attacking in pursuit of victory. Their efforts finally paid off in the 92nd minute when Valverde collected Brahim Diaz's pass and unleashed a powerful strike into the bottom-right corner. Following the final whistle, Koita received a red card for unsporting behaviour.
