Flamingos head coach Akeem Busari has described Nigeria’s qualification for the final of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup as a major achievement for the country and its football.
The Nigerian youngsters secured their historic place in the final after defeating Brazil 3-1 in Wednesday’s semi-final at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat, Morocco.
Reacting to the achievement, Busari expressed his happiness, describing the result as a positive development for Nigerian football.
“It's an awesome thing, it's a great achievement. Reaching the final is a plus for our country, it's a plus for our football. We are happy,” the coach told FIFA.
Nigeria produced an impressive second-half display to overcome Brazil after both teams went into the break without scoring.
Queen Joseph opened the scoring in the 56th minute before Awawu Bashiru extended Nigeria’s advantage in the 71st minute. Bashiru then completed her brace nine minutes later to put the Flamingos firmly in control.
Brazil managed to score a late consolation through Greise Kelly, but Nigeria held on to secure a memorable 3-1 victory.
The achievement is particularly significant because the Flamingos have become the first African team to reach the final of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup.
Nigeria had previously finished third at the 2022 edition in India, making this year's campaign the country's best performance in the competition.
The Flamingos will now face Japan in Saturday's final as they chase their first world title at this level.
Busari has expressed his desire to see the team complete their remarkable campaign by lifting the trophy, describing it as the perfect reward for their efforts.
