According to a report by BBC Sport on Saturday, October 17, 2026, Aston Villa secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Newcastle United in the Premier League at St. James’ Park, with Johan Manzambi scoring the decisive goal to extend the visitors’ impressive run of results.
Newcastle started brightly in front of their home supporters, pressing Villa during the opening 30 minutes. However, the hosts struggled to turn their possession and attacking pressure into clear-cut opportunities, allowing the visitors to remain organised defensively.
Villa threatened on the counterattack, with Nicolas Jackson presented with opportunities to open the scoring. The forward, who had scored twice in his side’s 6-0 Champions League victory over Fenerbahce earlier in the week, could not find the breakthrough as his effort was saved by goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek.
The visitors eventually took the lead in the 36th minute through Manzambi. Joao Gomes delivered a cross towards the far post, where the Aston Villa midfielder found himself unmarked before heading past Hornicek to give his side a crucial advantage.
Villa almost doubled their lead shortly afterwards when Emiliano Buendia struck a low effort that hit the base of the post before Newcastle escaped further punishment.
The hosts went into the interval trailing by a goal, having conceded in their 13th consecutive home match in the Premier League, setting an unwanted club record.
Newcastle showed greater attacking intent after the restart as they searched for an equaliser. Sven Botman came close to restoring parity with a powerful effort that forced Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki into an important save, with the shot-stopper tipping the ball wide.
Despite Newcastle's improved performance, Villa continued to threaten on the break. Ross Barkley tested Hornicek with a powerful strike, but the Newcastle goalkeeper produced another save to keep his team within reach of a result.
Newcastle increased the pressure during the closing stages as they attempted to rescue a point from the encounter. Yoane Wissa had two opportunities to level the score, but both efforts went narrowly wide of the post, allowing Villa to preserve their advantage until the final whistle.
The victory continued Aston Villa's resurgence in the Premier League following their impressive European performance against Fenerbahce. The result also marked the first time since 1958 that Newcastle had suffered successive home defeats against Villa in top-flight football.
