Chelsea have been warned against giving up on Jamie Gittens, despite growing uncertainty surrounding the winger's future under Xabi Alonso ahead of the January transfer window.
According to a report by FootballTransfers on Friday, 6 November 2026, Roma are monitoring the 22-year-old and could consider a loan move if they fail to sign Real Madrid forward Endrick.
Gittens joined Chelsea from Borussia Dortmund in July 2025 for €56 million after attracting attention as one of England's promising young attacking talents.
The winger had previously been compared to Jadon Sancho following his emergence at Dortmund, but his career at Stamford Bridge has failed to develop as expected.
He has made just 29 appearances for Chelsea, scoring only once, while struggling to establish himself as a regular starter.
His situation worsened during Chelsea's EFL Cup victory over Leeds, when he was substituted at half-time after receiving an opportunity to start his first match of 2026.
Injuries have also disrupted his progress. A hamstring problem kept him out for the final four months of last season, while an ankle injury has contributed to his recent absence.
Gittens is yet to make a Premier League appearance this season, raising further questions about his place in Alonso's plans.
However, FootballTransfers believes Chelsea should be careful about allowing the winger to leave permanently, with data analytics company SciSports identifying significant potential in the youngster.
According to its SciSkill assessment, Gittens could eventually become one of the 20 best players in the world if he fulfils his potential.
His maximum rating of 136.8 places him ahead of Manchester City's Jeremy Doku and promising forward Yan Diomande.
Nevertheless, finding regular playing time at Chelsea could prove difficult, particularly with competition from other attacking options, including Brazilian youngster Estevao.
A loan move to Roma could therefore offer an opportunity for Gittens to rebuild his confidence and rediscover his best form.
SciSports' Career Advice algorithm gives Roma a score of 75 for the potential move, with the Italian club receiving five stars for playing time.
Chelsea must now consider whether keeping Gittens in a difficult situation serves his development better than allowing him to gain valuable experience elsewhere.
Although his Stamford Bridge career has stalled, his potential suggests that the Blues should avoid making a permanent decision too quickly.
