According to a report by Manchester Evening Standard on Friday October 16, 2026, former Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has revealed how the club's handling of his contract situation left him heartbroken despite winning the Player of the Year award during the 2016-17 season.
The Spanish midfielder enjoyed a successful spell at Old Trafford after joining from Athletic Club in 2014. His impressive performances earned him the club's Player of the Year award, and he expected the recognition to lead to a new contract.
Speaking to Rio Ferdinand on Rio Meets, Herrera explained that he was so happy at Manchester United that he had told his agent he would accept whatever offer the club made. However, he became increasingly disappointed as the club failed to contact him about an extension.
Herrera revealed that he repeatedly asked his agent whether United had made an approach, only to receive no positive news. His frustration grew when the club eventually sent him a letter confirming that it was activating the fifth year of his existing contract.
“My heart was broken,” Herrera admitted, explaining that he had expected the club to speak to him personally rather than communicate through a letter.
The midfielder also recalled confronting former executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward over the decision, questioning why the club had not arranged a direct conversation with him.
Herrera spent five seasons at Manchester United, scoring 20 goals and providing 27 assists in 189 appearances across all competitions. He eventually left the club as a free agent in 2019 to join Paris Saint-Germain.
