According to a report by BBC Sport on Saturday, October 31, 2026, Manchester City suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat in their Premier League match against Brighton at the Etihad Stadium.
Brighton took the lead in the 11th minute when Yasin Ayari found the back of the net with a fine left-footed finish. Diego Gomez played an important part in the move, while Maxim De Cuyper provided the assist that allowed Ayari to put Brighton ahead.
Manchester City tried to respond after going behind and enjoyed more possession as they pushed forward in search of an equaliser. However, Brighton remained organised at the back and made it difficult for the home side to find space in dangerous areas.
Erling Haaland had opportunities to bring City back into the contest, but Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen was in excellent form and produced several important saves to protect his team's advantage. The visitors also threatened to increase their lead when Iliman Ndiaye struck the post in the 76th minute.
City continued to apply pressure in the closing stages, with Jeremy Doku forcing another save from Verbruggen in stoppage time, but Brighton held on to claim all three points.
The defeat means Maresca's Manchester City remain top of the Premier League table with 21 points, but they could be overtaken by second-placed Arsenal, who also have 21 points. Brighton, meanwhile, climbed to third position after the impressive win and now have 19 points. Below is how the Premier League table looks after Manchester City were stunned by Brighton.
