According to a report by London Evening Standard on Sunday October 25, 2026, Michael Carrick has denied rumors that the lap he took around Old Trafford after Sunday's 3-0 Premier League loss to Bournemouth was a goodbye to Manchester United fans.
The outcome has added further stress to the United manager's already heavy load, as his team faltered even when playing in their own stadium. The team's performance did not improve without captain Bruno Fernandes and forward Matheus Cunha.
Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox, according to former United defender Gary Neville, could make a decision about Carrick's future soon. Although it may be unpopular, Neville said the decision may be necessary, and he warned that it might anger supporters.
Dismissing Carrick would be beneficial for both sides, according to Jamie Carragher, who also demanded swift action. "For Michael Carrick's sake, Carrick needs to be relieved of his duties," he stated.
But Carrick clarified that cheering on the crowd at the final whistle wasn't a farewell. While he was grateful for the support from fans during that tough time, he confessed to having mixed feelings.
I didn't say goodbye; I just said goodbye," he told Sky Sports. I felt a range of emotions. Carrick elaborated by saying that he felt bad for the team and that he appreciated the bond with the fans, whose support was invaluable.
When asked about possible discussions about his position, Carrick acknowledged the disappointing results and the difficult situation. He reiterated his dedication to serving Manchester United's best interests.
"It will be interesting to watch," he continued, "but I really enjoy my work, I am proud of my position, and I am aware of the responsibility."
According to Carrick's interview with BBC Sport, he is not expecting anything in particular and needs time to think about the loss. He insisted he was fully capable of leading the team and that he had all the necessary energy and drive.
Harry Maguire, meanwhile, acknowledged that United's players should all take some of the blame for the team's poor performance. Although the defender lauded Carrick's past impact, he did concede that certain individuals had failed to meet expectations this season.
"Right now, we're not doing enough as a team," Maguire stated. The future of Michael Carrick is up in the air as Manchester United evaluate their lackluster play and the mounting scrutiny following Bournemouth's resounding win.
