According to a report by Madrid Universal on Sunday, November 1, 2026, Real Madrid have reportedly identified Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen as a possible long-term successor to Thibaut Courtois as the Spanish club begins planning for the future of its goalkeeping department.
Courtois has been an outstanding figure at the Santiago Bernabeu, consistently delivering impressive performances and establishing himself among the best goalkeepers in world football. However, with the Belgian international now 34 years old, Madrid are understood to be considering potential replacements who could eventually take over his position.
Journalist Ben Fernandes Santos reports that Real Madrid have been monitoring Verbruggen's development at Brighton, where the 24-year-old Netherlands international has continued to attract attention through his performances in the Premier League.
The goalkeeper recently produced an impressive performance against Manchester City, making seven important saves as Brighton secured a memorable victory at the Etihad Stadium without conceding. His contribution highlighted his growing confidence and ability to perform against some of Europe's strongest attacking teams.
Since joining Brighton from Anderlecht in 2023, Verbruggen has developed into the club's first-choice goalkeeper. His progress has also strengthened his position within the Netherlands national team, making him an increasingly attractive prospect for major European clubs.
His excellent reflexes, confidence when facing attackers, composure under pressure and accurate distribution are among the qualities that make him suitable for modern football. These attributes could appeal to Madrid as they consider the type of goalkeeper required to maintain their competitive standards in the coming years.
Nevertheless, Courtois remains the club's undisputed first-choice goalkeeper. The Belgian's current contract reportedly expires in 2027, with discussions over a possible extension said to be ongoing. His performances mean Madrid have no immediate need to make a change between the posts.
However, identifying a potential successor early could help the club avoid difficulties when Courtois eventually decides to leave. Replacing such an experienced goalkeeper would require someone capable of making crucial saves, organising the defence and handling the pressure associated with representing Real Madrid.
At 24, Verbruggen still has considerable room for improvement and may need additional experience before becoming ready for such responsibility. However, continued progress at Brighton could strengthen Madrid's interest.
Although no decision has been made, Verbruggen is reportedly emerging as an interesting candidate as Real Madrid begin preparing for life beyond Courtois.
