John Obi Mikel Fears ‘Superb’ Chelsea Star Could Leave Because of Xabi Alonso

According to a report by Metro on Monday October 26, 2026, if Estevao's limited playing time persists, John Obi Mikel has warned Xabi Alonso, Chelsea manager, that the Brazilian could think about leaving Stamford Bridge. Obi Mikel has urged Alonso to give Estevao more opportunities before the season ends.

The winger, who joined the club in the summer of 2025 from Palmeiras, made a strong impression in his first season, contributing to eight goals and four assists. But his season was cut short in April by a serious hamstring injury, which also prevented him from being named to Brazil's World Cup squad.

Ever since Alonso took over, Estevao has had trouble getting starting opportunities; he started just twice in the Carabao Cup this year. Joao Pedro, Cole Palmer, and Morgan Rogers have become Chelsea's go-to offensive trio.

Barcelona is allegedly keeping tabs on the situation and contemplating a possible move for the talented winger, while reports from Spain indicate that the teenager has grown frustrated with his current situation.

While praising Chelsea's offensive prowess, Mikel argued that Estevao deserved more playing time on The Obi One Podcast. Having a player with so much talent and ability makes it hard to imagine him not getting playing time, as the former midfielder put it.

The youngster can be introduced by Alonso without disrupting the current attacking partnership, according to Mikel. He suggests giving him second-half opportunities to gain confidence, rhythm, and consistency.

His time is limited. Mikel stated, "You want to be playing in the Champions League and Premier League, not disrespecting the Carabao Cup," highlighting the significance of testing himself against elite opponents.

Chelsea must do what the former Nigerian international thinks is necessary to keep Estevao from leaving due to his mounting dissatisfaction. He said the teen was a talented young player with a bright future ahead of him.

Additionally, Mikel emphasized the importance of Estevao showing determination during training, competing with teammates respectfully, and earning a regular starting eleven spot.

Following their 2-0 loss to Tottenham, Chelsea is now in fifth place. Before hosting Manchester United in their next Premier League match, Alonso's squad will play in the Carabao Cup against Liverpool, where they will try to bounce back.
