Moises Caicedo has just strengthened Willian’s claim that Chelsea should re-sign defender

According to a report by Football London on Wednesday 14 October 2026, Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo has revealed how much he learned from Thiago Silva while they were teammates at Stamford Bridge, adding weight to the case for the club to think about re-signing the Brazilian defender.

Willian, a former winger for Chelsea, thinks the current team could benefit from Silva's leadership and experience, so he has asked the club to think about bringing him back.

With Caicedo's return and the arrival of Jordan Henderson, Xabi Alonso has strengthened Chelsea's midfield options.

Nevertheless, the team is still worried about their defense and may look to add players in the upcoming January transfer window.

In 2024, Silva rejoined his former Brazilian club Fluminense after leaving Chelsea. Returning to his boyhood club, the veteran defender had a stint at Porto after that.

Because of his leadership and experience, Silva is still admired by Chelsea fans and old teammates, even though he is 42 years old.

During a recent appearance on the podcast of John Obi Mikel, Willian brought up the prospect of reuniting with his former teammate.

It would be my immediate decision to bring him back to Chelsea if I were the owner. Even if he doesn't start every game, the younger players benefit from having him on the squad. Impressive player," Willian remarked.

Caicedo has now added to the body of evidence demonstrating Silva's impact by elaborating on the advice the former Chelsea center back gave him.

Like Thiago Silva, you gain knowledge from your past mistakes. We looked up to him. He was an incredible leader for all of us. He helped us out whenever we needed it, Caicedo told Chelsea's official website.

In 2021, under Thomas Tuchel's tutelage, Silva helped Chelsea win the Champions League, and he played in 155 games for the club.

The current defensive options for Chelsea, which include Wesley Fofana, Levi Colwill, Josh Acheampong, and Maxence Lacroix, could benefit from his experience.

Despite Chelsea's savvy signings in other areas, the back line is missing a seasoned veteran to help younger players adjust to the rigors of playing at the highest level.

Although a return by Silva is still in the realm of speculation, his familiarity with the club could also make him an invaluable mentor. It would be necessary to take into account his age and current obligations at Fluminense before any action could be taken.

Reportedly among Chelsea's top January targets is Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott, who would help bolster Chelsea's midfield.
