According to a report by Football London on Sunday October 25, 2026, after Chelsea's disheartening 2-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge, Joe Cole slammed three players, citing midfield flaws and a costly goalkeeping error as the reasons.
It was only the second loss for Chelsea against Tottenham in 42 matches played at Stamford Bridge, and it was their first home loss under Xabi Alonso. Roberto De Zerbi's squad played well all London Derby season, showing Chelsea where they were lacking tactically.
An own goal by Mike Penders followed a costly error, and another goal by Mathys Tel was the result of a superb individual effort. Without Joao Pedro, Chelsea had trouble creating scoring chances, and Tottenham took command of the midfield.
Morgan Rogers was shifted into the center of the attack by Alonso, and Geovany Quenda was chosen to replace Joao Pedro. Nevertheless, Tottenham took advantage of their numerical superiority in the middle of the field, as James Maddison, Sandro Tonali, and Mateus Fernandes caused problems for Moises Caicedo and Jordan Henderson, respectively.
While appearing on Premier League Productions, Cole singled out Henderson, Caicedo, and Penders as individuals responsible for Chelsea's underwhelming display. Compared to their prior performances, he thought the midfield pairing was unbalanced and lacking in intensity.
After their previous performance, Cole noted that "Caicedo and Henderson didn't look quite as balanced or as at it."
Following the costly mistake made by the goalkeeper, the former Chelsea midfielder also cast doubt on Penders' physical strength. Cole said the kid had potential and that the experience could help him grow, even though he criticized his performance.
Penders is simply not powerful enough. They have a lot of respect for this young man, Penders, who is learning his trade. Cole clarified that he is simply not powerful enough.
He went on to say that the young goalkeeper may not have dealt with comparable situations before, citing the slick field and physical contact from Jan Paul van Hecke.
"As a young man, he'll come back stronger," Cole said, adding that Penders could take the loss as a learning experience.
The running statistics that Henderson compiled also helped to draw attention to his performance. The seasoned midfielder had previously clocked more distance than any of Chelsea's opponents in wins over Everton and Bournemouth.
In terms of total distance covered, though, Tonali of Tottenham came out on top, clocking 11.7 kilometers to Henderson's 11.5 kilometers for Chelsea.
As Chelsea looks to bounce back from a disappointing derby performance, the result has put the spotlight on their midfield struggles and defensive vulnerability, leaving Alonso with important questions to address.
