Man Utd in Dreamland As Premier League Top Class Striker Says Yes to Old Trafford Move in January

According to a report by TeamTalk on Wednesday October 21, 2026, Manchester United have received encouraging news in their pursuit of Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, with reports suggesting the French forward would welcome a move to Old Trafford during the January transfer window.

TEAMtalk transfer insider Graeme Bailey reported on September 29 that United were considering a mid-season move for Mateta as they look to strengthen their attacking options. Sources indicate that director of football Jason Wilcox has identified the Palace striker as a potential target.

Wilcox reportedly values Mateta’s Premier League experience and impressive goalscoring record, believing both qualities could prove important for United. The striker’s current contract at Selhurst Park expires in the summer of 2027, and there has been little indication that he intends to sign an extension.

According to talkSPORT, Mateta is interested in joining United in January and would be open to working under Michael Carrick. His reluctance to commit his future to Palace could place the London club in a difficult position as they consider their options.

Palace may decide to sell the forward during the January window rather than risk losing him for nothing when his contract expires in 2027. Such a situation could encourage interested clubs to make their moves before the end of the season.

Mateta joined Palace in January 2022 and has since established himself as an important attacking option. The 29-year-old has recorded 62 goals and 14 assists in 204 appearances across all competitions for the Eagles.

However, Manchester United face competition for his signature. TEAMtalk correspondent Fraser Fletcher reported on October 15 that Tottenham Hotspur are also monitoring the striker as they assess potential attacking reinforcements.

Mateta’s availability could attract further interest if Palace become willing to negotiate a transfer. Nevertheless, his current fitness remains a concern, having made only two appearances for the club this season because of a hamstring injury.

United’s interest will depend on their transfer priorities, Palace’s willingness to sell and whether Mateta can return to full fitness. His reported openness to the move, however, represents a potential boost for the Red Devils ahead of January.
