According to a report by BBC SPORT on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, Chelsea were eliminated from the Carabao Cup after suffering a 6-5 penalty shootout defeat against Liverpool at Anfield, following a 1-1 draw after normal time.
Morgan Rogers scored from the penalty spot to give Chelsea the advantage, but Cody Gakpo levelled the score for Liverpool. Neither side could find a decisive goal, forcing the encounter to be settled through penalties, where the Reds eventually prevailed.
1. Wesley Fofana
Wesley Fofana had a night to forget against Liverpool after making two costly mistakes that hurt Chelsea's hopes of reaching the next round. The defender conceded a penalty in the 42nd minute when he handled the ball inside his own box, allowing Gakpo to score from the spot and restore Liverpool's hopes.
His struggles continued during the penalty shootout, where he sent his kick high over the crossbar. The missed penalty increased the pressure on Chelsea and ultimately contributed to their 6-5 defeat in the shootout.
2. Valentin Barco
Valentin Barco also played a part in Chelsea's disappointing elimination after failing to score his penalty during the shootout. The midfielder's attempt struck the left post, giving Liverpool a valuable advantage as the contest reached its decisive stage.
Having replaced Moises Caicedo in the 68th minute, Barco had relatively little time to influence the game. However, his missed penalty proved significant as Chelsea's hopes of progressing in the Carabao Cup came to an end.
3. Levi Colwill
Levi Colwill delivered an inconsistent performance after replacing the injured Maxence Lacroix at half-time. Although the defender helped Chelsea continue their efforts to find a winning goal, he missed a promising opportunity in the second half.
Colwill rose to meet Jordan Henderson's corner in the 78th minute, but his header from around the penalty spot drifted wide of the right post. Despite failing to take advantage of the chance, he kept his composure during the penalty shootout and successfully converted his kick.
4. Morgan Rogers
Morgan Rogers opened the scoring for Chelsea but could not maintain his influence throughout the match. The midfielder converted his penalty in the 40th minute to put the visitors ahead, although several subsequent attempts failed to produce another goal.
His effort from the edge of the box was blocked in the 53rd minute, and a further attempt was stopped by a Liverpool defender in the 61st minute. Rogers also missed the target with a free kick in the 67th minute before sending a volley over the bar in the 85th minute.
Despite scoring from the spot during the shootout, Rogers could not prevent Chelsea from losing 6-5 on penalties. The result brought their Carabao Cup campaign to a disappointing end at Anfield.
