Cesc Fabregas Explains Why He Won’t Discuss Manchester United Managerial Links

According to a report by Metro on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, former Arsenal and Chelsea captain Cesc Fabregas has responded to speculation linking him with the Manchester United managerial job, insisting that discussing the possibility would be disrespectful to Michael Carrick.

Fabregas, who is currently in charge of Italian club Como, was asked about the reports ahead of their Champions League meeting with Manchester United. The Spaniard declined to discuss the speculation, expressing respect for Carrick, who returned to Old Trafford last season and guided the club to a third-place finish in the Premier League, securing qualification for the Champions League.

Manchester United have struggled during the opening stages of the 2026/27 campaign, recording just two victories in their first 10 matches across all competitions. Their disappointing results have prompted speculation about potential managerial alternatives, with Fabregas among the names linked with the position.

However, the former Barcelona midfielder refused to entertain suggestions that he could replace Carrick. Fabregas also rejected the idea that Manchester United were experiencing a crisis, arguing that football teams must concentrate on their next matches rather than become distracted by negative assessments.

The Como manager stressed that every fixture presents an opportunity for teams to compete and secure victories, adding that he does not believe in the concept of a crisis in football. While Manchester United have encountered difficulties, Como have enjoyed an encouraging start to their Serie A campaign, losing just one of their opening seven league matches.

Fabregas also reflected on his journey with the Italian club, having arrived as a player four years ago before eventually taking charge of the team. He explained that Como had undergone significant development since his arrival but acknowledged that the club still had plenty to learn as they continued their progress.

Despite the difference in their recent fortunes, Fabregas recognised Manchester United's history and the quality of their squad ahead of the Champions League encounter. The Spaniard maintained that Como would approach the contest with respect for their opponents while attempting to compete on the pitch.

Both teams entered their third league-phase fixture level on three points, with Como occupying 12th position and Manchester United sitting 13th in the Champions League standings. The meeting therefore presents both sides with an opportunity to improve their positions as the competition progresses.
