According to a report by Football London on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, Chelsea could strengthen their defensive options in January, with Pep Chavarria potentially facing an uncertain future following reports linking the club with Brentford left-back El Hadji Malick Diouf.
Chelsea and Liverpool have opened talks over a possible move for the Senegal international, who joined Brentford from West Ham United for £40 million last summer.
Xabi Alonso invested heavily in his defence during the previous transfer window, bringing in Emi Martinez, Chavarria, Marco Palestra and Maxence Lacroix. However, injuries to Martinez and Lacroix have disrupted his plans.
Chavarria has also struggled to secure a regular starting position, sharing left-back responsibilities with Jorrel Hato.
Palestra's recent selection in that position against Manchester United, despite being naturally right-footed, has further raised questions about Alonso's preferred options.
Diouf, 21, has emerged as a potential January target after impressing with his pace, physical strength and attacking contributions.
His 2025-26 statistics show that he recorded more clearances, aerial duels won and successful crosses per 90 minutes than Chavarria. However, the Chelsea defender registered more tackles and recoveries.
Brentford are unlikely to welcome the prospect of losing a player they signed only months ago, although a significant offer could influence their position.
Chelsea's reported interest in another left-back suggests Alonso may want further competition in the position despite the club's substantial summer investment.
For Chavarria, the situation presents an important challenge as he attempts to establish himself at Stamford Bridge and convince Alonso that he can provide a long-term solution at left-back.
