Valentin Barco believes Chelsea-linked Nico Paz could one day inherit Argentina’s iconic number 10 shirt after Lionel Messi retires from international football.
The Athletic reported on Thursday, 5 November 2026, that Barco had praised the Como midfielder and said he hoped Paz would eventually wear the famous jersey.
Paz has drawn widespread attention for his performances under former Chelsea player Cesc Fabregas. The 22-year-old has become a key figure for Como and is reportedly on the radar of several European clubs, including Chelsea.
Chelsea scouts have watched him in action, including Como’s Champions League loss to Feyenoord and their Serie A win over Fiorentina, where Paz scored and assisted. He later added another goal and assist against Torino, then recorded three goal contributions in Como’s 9–1 victory over Lens.
Chelsea are reportedly weighing up a move, though a January transfer is considered unlikely. Real Madrid are said to have a £70 million buyback clause in Paz’s agreement, while Chelsea may be willing to offer around £100 million.
Barco, who roomed with Paz during the 2026 World Cup, was asked which young Argentine could make a major impact for the national team.
“Nico, maybe,” he said. “He’s very, very good and well-rounded in every way. I really like the way he plays.”
Asked if Paz could take Argentina’s number 10 shirt, Barco replied: “I really hope so. I’d love to see it. We shared a room at the World Cup and spent more than 50 days together, as well as time at a few training camps. We know each other’s journeys, and I hope he gets to wear it.”
Barco is not the only Argentina international to back Paz as a possible successor to Messi. Goalkeeper Emi Martinez has also voiced support for the Como midfielder.
Paz’s creative numbers have added to his growing reputation. He is reportedly averaging 2.68 chances created per 90 minutes this season, more than Chelsea’s Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer.
Chelsea’s interest could help them bolster their attack, but persuading Como to part with Paz is likely to be difficult.
