FSV Mainz 05 travels to face FC Schalke 04 in the Bundesliga on Saturday at 15.30, with goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow returning to Gelsenkirchen more than three years after the last meeting between the clubs on May 5, 2023. Schwolow will make his third start in place of the injured Robin Zentner as Mainz attempts to shore up a defense that has leaked 10 goals across its last three outings.
Schwolow previously wore the Schalke kit during their campaign, which ended in relegation, despite a 3–2 victory over Mainz on May 5, 2023. Now guarding the net for the Rheinhessen, the goalkeeper finds himself picking the ball out of the net with alarming frequency. Mainz surrendered three goals to Eintracht Frankfurt, three to Borussia Mönchengladbach, and four to Bayer Leverkusen in recent weeks, leaving head coach Urs Fischer’s backline searching for stability.

Fischer absolved his goalkeeper of primary blame for the recent defensive collapse, pointing instead to systemic errors. According to Fischer, the team has suffered from a high volume of individual mistakes that opponents immediately punish, even though Mainz is not conceding a high number of clear-cut scoring chances.
Fischer emphasized that defensive solidity requires strict discipline across all three lines of the pitch. The coach noted that the distances between Mainz’s tactical blocks have grown too wide in recent matches, preventing the team from defending the goal collectively.
“If you want to win games, the cooperation between the three lines must be very good, if not perfect,” Fischer said, warning that failure to correct the spacing against Schalke could result in the team’s first away defeat of the season. Fischer also cautioned his squad to prepare for an intense, physical battle against the hosts. “At Schalke, it goes quickly to the backline and over the second ball; it is about intensity and aggressiveness. If we do not accept that, we will struggle.”
Amid the tactical fine-tuning, Mainz has locked down another promising prospect for the future. Rael Nakuzola signed a professional contract with the club after impressing the coaching staff during the summer preseason. Originally brought in from the A-Jugend of Rot-Weiss Essen to bolster the under-23 regional league squad as a left-back, Nakuzola quickly earned a permanent spot on the Bundesliga matchday bench.
Nakuzola made his professional debut during the closing stages of a 5–0 victory over Hamburger SV and also appeared as a substitute against Eintracht Frankfurt. Sporting director Niko Bungert praised the teenager’s rapid adaptation. “Rael has used the opportunity to draw attention to himself,” Bungert said. “We are honoring his positive development with this contract.” Nakuzola acknowledged the swift progression, noting that he is proud and happy to secure the deal while remaining patient about breaking into the starting lineup.
