Cole and 2 other players who cannot afford to disappoint against Tottenham

Chelsea welcome London rivals Tottenham to Stamford Bridge for their first Premier League meeting of the season, with the Blues desperate to dish out a reality check and send Spurs back across the capital with glum faces.

Both sides head into the clash on the back of wins, but while Chelsea are sitting pretty in the top four, they cannot afford to take their eyes off the ball. Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham side are showing signs of life, and there would be no sweeter way for Spurs to ruin the weekend than by spoiling the party at the Bridge.

We highlight three players who must deliver for Xabi Alonso’s men. If all three hit their stride, Chelsea will have a solid platform to secure the win.

Cole Palmer

Palmer is integral to Chelsea’s first team, with the majority of their attacking play and forward movement channelled through him.

When he receives the ball between the lines, the movement around him becomes sharper and chances begin to follow, with his sidekick Morgan Rogers and the wider players providing vital support.

Tottenham will be aware of his influence and will look to limit the space he can operate in. However, based on the Spurs game I watched, there are opportunities to exploit gaps in their midfield and hurt the defence, as Tonali’s tendency to press and chase the ball can leave his midfield partner exposed, creating pockets of space for Palmer to exploit if Chelsea can move the ball quickly enough.

Palmer has the quality to meet that challenge. His creativity and composure in the final third give Chelsea their best route to goal, and he is the player most likely to decide a tight match.

Mike Penders

Penders comes into the side following Emi Martinez’s injury, giving the young goalkeeper a valuable opportunity to come of age and make a statement.

A convincing performance against a dangerous Tottenham side would put genuine pressure on Martinez to win his place back, rather than simply reclaiming it once he returns to fitness.

Trust between the posts is built on consistency, and Penders must demonstrate calm decision-making, secure handling and confidence under pressure, areas where his Carabao Cup performances have yet to fully convince. If he can deliver when it matters most, Xabi Alonso could face a genuine selection dilemma when Martinez is fit again.

Moises Caicedo

Caicedo is central to Chelsea’s defensive structure, and his return has already underlined just how much the team relies on his presence.

Chelsea have conceded just once in their two games since he returned, with that goal coming from a corner. The contrast is striking given they shipped 12 goals across the previous five matches he missed.

Against Tottenham, Caicedo’s task will be to disrupt their attacks before they can threaten the defence, while keeping a close eye on James Maddison’s influence between the lines. When Caicedo is at his best, he provides the protection and control that allow Chelsea’s more attacking players to flourish.
