Winger Tshepang Moremi, who had been less prominent in recent matches, scored the only goal of the game at the Gaborone National Stadium, a neutral venue in Botswana.
The Buccaneers are set to face African Stars again at Orlando Amstel Arena for the second leg on Friday.
Ouaddou has prioritized securing a spot in the group stages this season after last year’s disappointing exit in the second preliminary round against Congolese side Eloi Lupopo.
“We’ve made it through the first half of the two matches, but we still have the second half to play in South Africa,” Ouaddou stated in the press conference post-match.
“I wouldn’t say we have one foot in the group stages yet. The second half is crucial, and we must prepare thoroughly to advance,” he added.
“Achieving this goal is vital for the club, the coaching staff, and the players. We will ensure to rest well and train hard to approach the next match with a winning mindset.”
The conditions in Gaborone were challenging for the Soweto giants, but Ouaddou praised his coaching staff for their thorough preparations.
“At the start of the week, our analysis team warned us about expected temperatures of 35 or 36 degrees,” Ouaddou explained.
“We were ready for it. I reminded my players that we were on a mission and that we are soldiers preparing for battle.
“We don’t allow weather to intimidate us; we are focused on winning, regardless of whether it’s 40 degrees or -10. Our aim is to secure results and progress to the next group stages.
“We mentally prepared the players because, in the Champions League, one must be able to adjust to any circumstance; it’s all part of growth and development in football.”
A win or a draw for the Buccaneers on Friday will secure their spot in the CAF Champions League group stage.
