Former Moroka Swallows and Black Leopards striker Joseph Mhlongo has taken the next step in his football career after being appointed assistant coach at North-West ABC Motsepe League side Army Rocket FC.

The 36-year-old joins the technical team led by head coach Themba Masango following his retirement from professional football in 2025. Mhlongo enjoyed a playing career spanning more than a decade, gaining experience that he will now look to apply in his new coaching role.

Army Rocket FC confirmed the appointment, explaining the responsibilities Mhlongo will take on as part of the club's technical structure.

"He will work alongside the head coach to strengthen the team's technical preparation and performance," the club confirmed.

Mhlongo's arrival gives Army Rocket FC an additional member of staff with firsthand knowledge of the demands of competitive football. His experience as a striker could prove particularly useful when working with attacking players, helping them improve their movement, positioning, finishing and decision-making in front of goal.

Having played for clubs such as Moroka Swallows and Black Leopards, Mhlongo understands the challenges footballers face throughout a season. His experience could also help younger players adjust to the physical and mental demands of competitive matches.

However, the transition from playing to coaching requires a different set of skills. Mhlongo will need to work closely with Masango, contribute to training plans and help the squad implement the team's tactical approach.

Army Rocket FC will hope the appointment strengthens its preparations as the club continues competing in the North-West ABC Motsepe League. The division provides a competitive environment for teams seeking to establish themselves and progress through South African football's development structure.

Mhlongo's influence will ultimately depend on how effectively he combines his playing knowledge with the responsibilities of coaching. His appointment offers an opportunity to build experience on the technical side of the game while helping the club pursue its objectives.

Although his arrival does not guarantee immediate success, his experience could become a valuable addition to Army Rocket FC's coaching setup.
