Coach Miguel Cardoso insists only a win will guarantee progression

Mamelodi Sundowns utility player Thapelo Morena says they know exactly what to do during the second leg of their Champions League qualifier clash against Wiliete SC of Angola on Friday at Loftus (8pm).

The tie is interesting because they played to a 0-0 draw in the first leg last weekend, and the vastly experienced Bafana Bafana player said their target is to get to the group stages.

The Brazilians must win in front of their own supporters because a goalless draw takes the match to the lottery of penalties, and they will be eliminated with a draw with goals.

They go into this match with an impressive record of having qualified for the group stages since 2016, when they went all the way to win it.

The last time Sundowns failed to qualify for the group stages of the Champions League was in 2015 when they lost to TP Mazembe of the DRC.

“We have passed the stage where we speak about knowing how to deal with the moments. Now we are giving everything to the team; the point we got in Angola is important,” said a confident Morena, admitting they should have done better in the first half than the 0-0 draw.

“We know what we need to do here at home; that is clear. We are going to give our best on Friday and try to get to the group stages of the Champions League again.

“This is the most important game for the team because we have been in the group stages for the past 10 years. We could have done better in the first leg in Angola, but things didn’t go well.

“The most important thing is the game that we are playing on Friday.”

Coach Miguel Cardoso said they need to play better than they did in Angola.

“Our story is of a team that wants to win everything. This will be a match between two teams that want to progress to the group stages of the Champions League.

“We know if we win we go through; if we draw 0-0 we go to penalties, and if we draw with goals we are out. We need to play to our best level and go to the next stage of the competition.”
