The famous Botswana National Stadium serves as the setting once more for a high-stakes continental clash when Orlando Pirates gear up for the opening leg of their CAF Champions League Second Preliminary Round encounter with Namibian giants African Stars on Saturday.
The two legs against the reigning Namibian Premiership champions stand between the Soweto Giants and a return to the group stage of the continent’s premier club competition. All their attention will be on the opening leg where a good result could put them in the driving seat ahead of the decider in Soweto.
It’s a do-or-die tie for the two Southern African giants who are both eager to prevail and ensure an extended run in the prestigious competition.
The Challenge Ahead
The two-legged tie pits a side with the benefit of regular competition against one that could potentially benefit from the advantage of additional preparation time. Pirates are on one side of the coin, with their season in full swing after kicking their domestic season in August.
In the week since returning from the September international break, the Buccaneers have already had a taste of both cup and league action and now face their third opponent in the space of eight days. They now make a trip to Botswana having secured their spot in the Second Preliminary Round through a 3-1 aggregate win against Mauritius’ La Cure Waves, with all four goals coming in the final leg at Orlando Amstel Arena.
They kick off yet another tie on the road, returning to the familiar backdrop of the Botswana National Stadium – albeit against different opposition – as they prepare to face the Namibians. Pirates have stepped onto the famous Gaborone venue twice in recent years, beating local outfit Jwaneng Galaxy 3-0 in the second round of the 2020/21 CAF Confederation Cup before a disappointing 1-0 defeat to the same side in the 2023/24 edition of the Champions League.
The memories of that last visit were somewhat exorcised by a commanding showing in their most recent game in Botswana, where they netted two unanswered goals against Jwaneng in St Francistown.
A different challenge now awaits in the form of the Namibians, who conquered their own domestic league before adding the scalp of their first opponents in the continental tournament.
In the six months since claiming a record ninth league title, Stars have been short of meaningful game time with the 2026/27 edition of the Namibian Premiership only set to kick off in the coming weeks. Their two-legged tie against Mangasport has so far been their only taste of competitive action during this period.
Lack of regular action has however not stopped them from rewriting club history in their showdown with the Gabonese outfit, where they won on away goals following a 3-3 aggregate score. With that victory, they avoided falling on the first hurdle for the first time ever and are now on the brink of stepping further into uncharted territory with only one obstacle standing between them and a historic debut in the group stages.
Known as the Samba Boys, the Namibian giants now go toe-to-toe with a team that once prevented their entry into the last 16. Following a goalless stalemate in Soweto, it only took the Buccaneers one goal in the second leg to advance in the 2018 edition of the tournament when the late Justin Shonga provided the decisive moment early in the second half.
That two-legged tie remains the only previous meeting between the two sides, and the stakes will be all-to-familiar on Saturday as they battle it out for a spot among Africa’s elite.
Opposition Profile
African Stars have been Namibia’s perennial representatives in the Champions League, thanks to what has been a dominant spell in their domestic league. The club was founded in 1962 and enjoyed great success over the past two decades, when they won eight of their nine top-flight league titles along with nine major cup trophies.
They have undergone some key changes in the lead-up to their meeting with Pirates, most notably the departure of former Mamelodi Sundowns and Namibia goalkeeper Ronnie Kalalelo, who left to join South African outfit Marumo Gallants. They recently appointed former youth coach Gerald Günther, who will take his spot in the dugout for the first time when they square up against the Soweto Giants.
His squad has had a few reinforcements in the off-season, with the likes of former SuperSport United defender Liyema Dopolo joining from Premiership rivals Ongos, alongside another South African in midfielder Liam April who previously turned out for ABC Motsepe Championship outfit Hope FC, and has already opened his goal-scoring account with his new side.
They boast some notable experience in their ranks in veteran centre-back Dynamo Fredericks, who will be all-too-familiar with the Buccaneers having faced them at the same venue during his spell with Botswana giants Jwaneng Galaxy. He could line up alongside national teammates Mervin Kasetura, who is expected to feature between the sticks, along with fellow defender Charles Hambira and promising midfielder Okeri Nguarambuka – all fresh from representing the Brave Warriors during the recently-concluded FIFA break.
