Carrick's position looked under threat after Man Utd were beaten 3-0 at home by Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday.

United have now gone eight matches without a win and it has been reported that Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann would be the front-runners to replace Carrick.

However, Carrick is set to remain in charge for now following a meeting of the club's hierarchy.

According to The Athletic, senior leadership figures at the club, including co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox, have made the decision to stick with Carrick.

The former Man Utd midfielder was at the club's training ground on Monday to watch an Under-21s game and then returned on Tuesday for training.

He is expected to be in the dugout for Man Utd's next game against Chelsea on Saturday, live with TNT Sports on HBO Max.

How much longer Carrick remains in charge remains to be seen.

It is reported by the BBC that Carrick "will be given the opportunity to turn things around at Old Trafford".

Man Utd are 16th in the Premier League table with just seven points from eight matches. Their only victory of the campaign so far was against newly-promoted Ipswich.

They were also thrashed 4-1 by Como in the UEFA Champions League, after which captain Bruno Fernandes was critical of the team's tactical approach.

The comments seemingly led to Fernandes being dropped against Bournemouth, although Carrick said the decision was for "pure football" reasons.

Fernandes did not come off the bench in the defeat to Bournemouth.

Carrick was shown support by fans in the stands following the match while players were booed as they made their way off the pitch.

Reflecting on the reaction from those in the stands, Carrick said: "I have to say I have really mixed emotions, I wasn’t really expecting that of the supporters, if I’m honest. I’ve always felt their support, and always felt that connection with them anyway.

"[They’re] probably sick of me saying it all the time and the amount of times I’ve sat here and said it, but the respect I’ve got for them, and for them to show that back meant an awful lot. To be in such a difficult situation and go through a day like we have done, and a spell like we have done is difficult to take, so there’s real mixed emotions in there, for sure."

After playing Chelsea, Man Utd then take on Roma, Aston Villa and Liverpool.
