De Villiers Responds to His First Victory as Stormers Captain

Paul de Villiers could not have envisioned a more perfect beginning as captain of the DHL Stormers, guiding his squad to a bonus-point triumph over the Bristol Bears in their inaugural Investec Champions Cup match, showcasing poise and determination in tough conditions.

Looking back on his first outing as captain, De Villiers expressed satisfaction with the team’s display, especially the chances given to numerous players and their defensive efforts even when they faced the challenge of being down to 13 men at one point.

“I’m quite pleased about it. To my left is a Springbok captain, and to my right is Brannas (Deon Fourie). It was a favourable start, but we can’t complain,” De Villiers remarked.

“This is the first Investec Champions Cup match – several players got a chance, we achieved a bonus-point win, and we prevented them from scoring, so I was genuinely happy,” he added.

Although the result was promising, the team’s resolve was put to the test during a challenging phase when JJ Kotze was shown a 20-minute red card, followed by Leolin Zas also being sent to the sin-bin.

Competing with two fewer players during a segment of the game called for strict discipline, resilience, and adept game management. The Stormers rose to the occasion, diligently working to curtail Bristol’s chances and safeguarding their lead.

De Villiers acknowledged that there might have been questions about the team’s energy during this stretch but emphasized the importance of considering the circumstances.

“It might appear as a lack of energy, but it’s tough to assess when playing with two fewer players,” he elaborated.

“Picture the scenario if we were attacking with two men down. Gaps would easily emerge, and you might find yourself racing back to the try line every other phase, so there was a lot of character displayed by the boys.”

While pleased with the team’s response, De Villiers acknowledged there were areas requiring improvement, especially regarding situations within the team’s control.

“Those are controllable aspects, and we aim to improve in that area, but overall our discipline was commendable.”

More than just the victory, De Villiers’ debut as captain also marked the pinnacle of a journey forged through patience, persistence, and gradual advancement through the ranks.

For junior players aiming for the highest level, he offered advice shaped by his own experience of awaiting opportunities and tirelessly working toward his ambitions, even when progress seemed slow.

“There were times leading up to this when I lost some patience – as a young player, you want to be on the field and to play,” he noted.

“Dobbo and I had some meaningful conversations when I was younger. I participated in every junior rugby match available, and that was crucial for me and probably why I find myself here today.”

His message to aspiring athletes was to remain patient, seize every opportunity, and maximize every moment, regardless of the competition level.

“I would emphasize that patience is critical and being present in the moment, even if it’s just for an under-20 game at City Park. Stay engaged and focused, as a few years down the line, it could lead to a different narrative.”

With a bonus-point win achieved in their opening Investec Champions Cup encounter, De Villiers and the Stormers have set a positive tone for their campaign. His journey is also a testament to young players that patience, persistence, and dedication can eventually lead to the opportunities they have long aspired to.
