Tinkler Wants Durban City to Stop Conceding Easy Goals

Durban City head coach Eric Tinkler has admitted that his team needs to improve defensively despite securing a 3-1 victory over Port Louis in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup second-round tie.

The Citizens claimed an important win at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday, putting themselves in a strong position ahead of the return leg in Mauritius. However, Tinkler was not completely satisfied with his team's performance, particularly the way they allowed their opponents to score.

The victory came in Tinkler's second match in charge of Durban City. His first game was a Betway Premiership defeat against AmaZulu last week, meaning the coach has already identified areas that need attention as he continues to work with his new team.

Although Durban City have shown progress in their attacking play, Tinkler believes their defensive organisation remains a concern. He pointed to the goals conceded against AmaZulu and Port Louis, explaining that his players must learn to defend better if they want to achieve their targets this season.

Tinkler said his initial focus had been on improving the team's attacking approach, but the recent matches had forced him to pay more attention to the defensive side of the game.

The coach is particularly concerned about how Durban City deal with opponents who look to attack quickly on the counter. He wants his players to be better organised when they have possession so that they are not left exposed when the opposition wins the ball back.

According to Tinkler, the team needs to improve its positioning and overall defensive structure. He believes these changes will be important as Durban City prepare for the second leg against Port Louis.

Despite his concerns, Tinkler remains positive about his team's chances of progressing in the competition. He wants Durban City to approach the return fixture with confidence rather than focusing only on protecting their two-goal advantage.

The coach has also made it clear that scoring in Mauritius will be an important part of their strategy. An away goal would put additional pressure on Port Louis and make their task more difficult.

However, Tinkler insists that his players must also work towards keeping a clean sheet. He wants them to remain dangerous in attack while showing greater discipline and organisation at the back.

Durban City will now have a few days to address these defensive problems before travelling for the return leg. Tinkler will hope his team can maintain its attacking threat while reducing the mistakes that have concerned him in recent matches.
