Why Relebohile Mofokeng’s Next Europa League Match Will Be Played Behind Closed Doors
South African football supporters looking forward to watching Relebohile Mofokeng in European competition will have to wait for another opportunity to experience the atmosphere of a packed stadium after Royale Union Saint-Gilloise confirmed that one of their upcoming UEFA Europa League matches will be played without spectators.
The Belgian club, home to the talented South African attacker, is preparing for another important European assignment as they continue their campaign in the 2026/27 UEFA Europa League. However, the absence of supporters at the designated fixture has attracted attention, particularly among fans following Mofokeng’s progress abroad.
The decision is linked to the circumstances surrounding Union Saint-Gilloise’s Europa League fixture against Israeli club Hapoel Be’er Sheva, scheduled to take place in Düsseldorf, Germany, behind closed doors. The arrangement means supporters will not be allowed into the stadium to watch the match in person.
The main reason for the unusual arrangement is security. Authorities in Leuven, where Union Saint-Gilloise had planned to host the match, prohibited the fixture because of concerns about public order surrounding the visit of an Israeli team amid the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The club subsequently explored alternative venues but could not find a suitable option in Belgium that would allow supporters to attend safely.
Union Saint-Gilloise eventually selected Düsseldorf Arena in Germany to host the encounter on 22 October 2026. The venue was chosen partly to keep the travelling distance for the players and technical staff as short as possible and minimise disruption to their preparations.
However, the move comes with a significant drawback: the match will take place behind closed doors, meaning neither home nor visiting supporters will be allowed inside the stadium.
For the club, the priority is to ensure the fixture can proceed under the necessary security arrangements while avoiding further complications in an already challenging European campaign.
The development is particularly noteworthy for South African supporters who have been following Mofokeng's transition from Orlando Pirates to European football. The young attacker has attracted attention with his performances for the Belgian side, including scoring on his Europa League debut against Viktoria Plzeň in September.
Union Saint-Gilloise won that opening European fixture 3-0, giving the club a positive start to its continental campaign.
Although playing without supporters will remove the familiar atmosphere associated with European nights, the match remains an important opportunity for the team to collect valuable points. The players will need to remain focused and adapt to the unusual conditions as they seek a positive result.
The absence of fans should not be interpreted as a disciplinary punishment against Mofokeng or his teammates. Instead, the decision stems from the security circumstances surrounding the fixture and the difficulties involved in finding an alternative venue.
For South African fans, attention will now turn to how Union Saint-Gilloise handle the unusual conditions when they face Hapoel Be'er Sheva in Germany.
Ultimately, the situation highlights how security concerns and wider geopolitical tensions can affect football beyond the pitch, forcing clubs to change venues and sacrifice the presence of supporters to ensure important European fixtures can go ahead.
