Mamelodi Sundowns have officially confirmed the signing of promising young midfielder Lazola Maku, strengthening their squad with another emerging South African talent as the club continues to invest in the future.
The 19-year-old has already gained valuable experience representing South Africa at youth international level, making his move to the Tshwane giants an important step in his football career.
Maku previously played for Siwelele FC and developed his skills at Ubuntu Football Academy. His performances at youth level, particularly for South Africa’s Under-20 national team, Amajita, helped establish him as a player with considerable potential.
One of the biggest highlights of his young career was being part of the South African side that won the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations. He also contributed to the team’s success at the COSAFA Under-20 Championship, achievements that further strengthened his reputation as a promising midfielder.
Beyond his performances on the pitch, Maku has also demonstrated leadership qualities. He previously captained Amajita, gaining experience in a role that requires responsibility, discipline and the ability to guide teammates.
Those qualities could prove valuable as he begins a new chapter at Sundowns, where competition for places is intense and players are expected to maintain high standards.
The midfielder has also had opportunities to experience football outside South Africa. He reportedly attended trials with Austrian clubs, including Rapid Vienna, SV Ried and FC Wacker Innsbruck. Such experiences may have helped broaden his understanding of the game and exposed him to different football environments.
His arrival at Mamelodi Sundowns represents another significant milestone in his development. The Pretoria-based club has established itself as one of the leading forces in South African football, regularly challenging for domestic trophies and competing in continental tournaments.
For Maku, the immediate challenge will be adapting to his new surroundings, learning from more experienced players and proving that he can compete at the required level.
At just 19, he has time to continue improving, while his experience with South Africa’s youth teams gives him a solid foundation to build upon.
Sundowns’ decision to bring in the young midfielder also reflects the club’s continued interest in identifying talented players who could contribute to its long-term ambitions. However, his progress will depend on consistent performances, hard work and the opportunities available to him.
The signing is likely to generate excitement among supporters eager to see emerging South African players develop within the club’s system.
Sundowns fans will now be watching closely to see how Maku settles into the team and whether he can translate his achievements at youth level into success in senior football.
For the young midfielder, joining Sundowns offers an opportunity to take his career to the next level and work towards establishing himself at one of the country's biggest clubs.
