Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Willard Katsande has praised the longevity and impact of his Zimbabwean compatriots Khama Billiat and Knowledge Musona as they lead ambitious side Scottland FC in the CAF Champions League.
The two experienced players both found the net in Scottland’s 2-0 home win over Angolan giants Petro de Luanda in the first leg of their second preliminary round tie at the National Sports Stadium in Harare. Billiat opened the scoring in the 67th minute before setting up Musona to double the lead late on. The result gives the Zimbabwean champions a strong advantage ahead of the return leg in Luanda.
Both men are 36 and spent successful years in South Africa’s Premier Soccer League with Kaizer Chiefs. Katsande, who played alongside them at the club and for the Warriors, believes their continued contribution at the highest level is down to hard work and commitment.
“I think it goes down to discipline and dedication to the game and they know what it takes,” Katsande told KickOff. “I once told them that, ‘Guys don’t leave the game early, because remember you are the role models of the next generation. Whenever they play with you and they see you live, they are being motivated.’”
Since returning to play in Zimbabwe, the pair have helped raise the standard of the local game. Katsande sees them as important ambassadors.
“You are just being ambassadors to revive our football and you are adding value,” he said. “If you can see after them coming to Zimbabwe football, it has taken a giant step from where it used to be and for them to come to the party in the big league, the CAF Champions League.”
Their goals against Petro de Luanda showed the value of their experience. Katsande is confident they can help Scottland go further in the competition.
“For them to come and chip in goals where it matters, I think their experience in Africa is rubbing into the guys,” he added. “I’m hopeful that they are going to play an instrumental role for the team to go all the way, to claim what they really deserve. The bottom line is they are there to inspire the next generation.”
He also noted that both players still look sharp and healthy, setting a strong example for younger footballers coming through. Scottland, coached by Norman Mapeza, are making their first appearance in the CAF Champions League after winning the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League title in their debut top-flight season.
