Former Premier Soccer League players Keletso Makgalwa and Anicet Oura were among the goalscorers as Simba SC secured an impressive 6-1 victory over Equatorial Guinean side 15 de Agosto in the CAF Champions League on Wednesday.
The Tanzanian club, coached by former Stellenbosch FC mentor Steve Barker, travelled to Equatorial Guinea for the first leg of their second preliminary round tie after the match had been postponed over the weekend.
Simba continued their impressive run of form with another convincing performance, scoring six goals to put themselves in a strong position ahead of the return leg in Tanzania.
The visitors took the lead shortly before half-time when Nathan Chilambo found the back of the net in the 44th minute. His goal gave Barker's team a 1-0 advantage at the break after a competitive opening period.
However, Simba increased their attacking intensity in the second half and quickly began to take control of the match.
Elie Mpanzu doubled their lead in the 56th minute before Ibrahim Doumbia added a third goal nine minutes later. With the visitors firmly in control, former Sekhukhune United winger Makgalwa joined the scoresheet in the 72nd minute to make it 4-0.
Makgalwa's goal continued his positive contribution to the team since joining the Tanzanian giants. The former South African top-flight player has been part of a Simba side that has shown impressive consistency in recent matches.
Former Stellenbosch FC forward Oura also made his mark on the match, scoring Simba's fifth goal in the 82nd minute. His contribution further highlighted the influence of players who previously featured in South Africa's top division.
Doumbia then completed his brace in the 88th minute, extending Simba's advantage to 6-0 and putting the result beyond doubt.
The home side managed to score a consolation goal in the 91st minute, but it did little to change the outcome of the encounter.
The result means Simba will head into Sunday's second leg with a five-goal advantage. Barker's team will now look to complete the job in front of their home supporters in Tanzania.
The victory also extended Simba's winning streak to 10 matches, underlining their strong form as they continue their campaign in Africa's premier club competition.
With Makgalwa and Oura both finding the net, the South African connections at Simba will be among the talking points ahead of the return fixture.
