Naturena Under Pressure As Chiefs’ CAF Campaign Starts With Red Arrows Defeat
Kaizer Chiefs have suffered an early setback in their CAF Confederation Cup campaign after losing 1-0 to Zambia’s Red Arrows in the first leg of their second preliminary-round tie at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on Saturday.
The narrow defeat leaves Amakhosi needing a strong response in the return leg as they fight to secure a place in the group stages of the continental competition.
Chiefs travelled to Zambia hoping to make a positive start to their campaign, but they struggled to impose themselves in the attacking third against a determined Red Arrows side.
Despite keeping the score level for much of the encounter, the visitors were eventually punished when Red Arrows captain Alassane Diarra headed home from a corner in the 76th minute. The goal proved decisive, giving the Zambian side a valuable advantage ahead of the second leg.
The result will raise questions about Chiefs’ ability to turn possession and promising attacking situations into clear scoring opportunities when the pressure is highest.
Head coach Fernando Da Cruz selected Luke Baartman to lead the attack, with Mduduzi Shabalala and Mfundo Vilakazi among the players expected to provide creativity and support in the final third.
However, Chiefs could not find a breakthrough before the final whistle. An injury to defender Thabiso Monyane during the first half also disrupted their plans, forcing an early substitution.
For Amakhosi, the defeat makes the upcoming return fixture particularly important. With the tie still open, the Soweto giants must improve their attacking efficiency while remaining organised defensively to avoid conceding another costly goal.
The second leg is scheduled for Friday, 23 October, at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, where Chiefs will have home advantage. The overall winner will advance to the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup.
Chiefs supporters will be hoping the team can respond with greater urgency and purpose in front of goal. The players will also need to manage the occasion carefully, knowing that another frustrating performance could end their continental ambitions before the group stage.
Although the first-leg result puts pressure on Da Cruz and his squad, the one-goal margin means qualification remains within reach.
The challenge for Naturena is now clear: produce a more convincing performance in Durban, take their chances and keep their CAF Confederation Cup journey alive.
