Former Orlando Pirates left-back Innocent Chikoya believes Saturday’s Soweto Derby exposed Kaizer Chiefs’ lack of strength in depth, arguing that Amakhosi still have significant work to do in building a squad capable of competing consistently at the highest level.
Chikoya shared his assessment following the highly anticipated encounter between the two Soweto giants, suggesting that the difference in squad depth remains one of the major challenges facing the Naturena-based club.
According to the former Pirates defender, Chiefs currently lack enough quality alternatives within their squad, particularly when it comes to making substitutions and maintaining the same level of performance throughout a match.
The ability to call upon equally competitive players from the bench is considered an important part of modern football, especially for teams competing in multiple competitions. Chikoya’s comments suggest that Chiefs still need to strengthen several areas of their squad if they are to close the gap on their biggest rivals.
For Amakhosi supporters, the assessment highlights an ongoing concern about the club's squad composition and whether the available players possess the necessary depth and quality to sustain a serious title challenge.
Kaizer Chiefs have been working towards restoring their status among South Africa's leading football clubs, but building a competitive squad requires more than just having a strong starting eleven. They also need reliable options capable of making an impact whenever they are called upon.
Chikoya's remarks have therefore brought the issue of squad depth back into focus following another fiercely contested chapter in the historic Soweto Derby.
